Layer

The thought process on this week's illustration Friday theme, "layer":

Sunday morning I drove somewhere, and the weather was bleak, and totally gorgeous.
I got to see this,
 and this,

and um, yep that is me taking photos with my phone, from my car, while driving. I admit it. But as far as I know in Utah I can only get pulled over for texting and driving so no big deal right? (that is a slightly sarcastic comment, just in case you were wondering)

Anyway, I knew there was an illustration in this bleak gorgeous day, and that it had to be done with watercolors. So I created one. (that's what you see at the top)
Here is a close up of the image.

I apparently am not the first one to use this take on "layer". Last night I saw Abagial Halpin's lovely interpretation of the theme as I was finishing mine up. I guess great minds think similar... or both she and I live in places with snow at the moment, and we have to wear layers to keep warm. It could be either one of those reasons.

  1. This is really well done! I love the textures. How did you achieve that? Maybe using layers in PS? Or is it done traditionally with paint? Either way it works beautifully to get that icy, chilly effect!

  3. Thanks Phyllis and exgi.

It is all done traditionally with paint and colored pencil. The texture is watercolor and salt.

  7. Very nice illo and beautiful effect in the background. It looks very chilly there. It's suppose to be 60 here in So. Cal. tomorrow and I've already got a large coat, sweater and scarf laid out.

  10. Thanks you guys. I'm glad the atmosphere worked and the big tree. That is what I was working toward.

Jennifer- 60 that sounds so warm. Light jacket weather. :) funny how climate can change perspective. It might get up to 40 degrees today and that sounds great to me.

  11. I agree with the comments above, you really succeeded in creating a wonderful mood here. I love your use of the watercolour medium. It looks so effortless, which I think is always a key ellement in getting your audience to get sucked into an illustration.

  13. This is such a wonderful piece, Manelle! Great atmosphere and mood. I love the way you emphasize the size of the tiny figures with all that space around them. I'm glad that I'm not the only one who enjoys 'bleak' days. You've shown that they are beautiful too!

  14. Priscilla thanks. I always wanted to paint something that looks effortless. Glad it worked, at least in your opinion. :)

Thanks Joo Joo and Marion, I love winter because it's full of days like this. I think it's beautiful to look at. Although I do prefer to do it from inside where it's warm.
