Yesterday I came upstairs after a couple of hours in my downstairs studio/bedroom and found a fabulous package on the kitchen table for me. Was it the travel set of watercolors I recently ordered from ASW and am anxiously waiting for? No,it was copies of a book illustrated back in March. A little book of short stories that I did a cover and interiors for. Here are a couple of my favorites.
Mostly it was pretty darn exciting to get the books and see my stuff but at the same time there's that part of me that hates the whole thing. I mean, there are my illustrations in a book. I did my best on them at the time but now I can see so much that I could have improved. Ulgh! (isn't just how it goes) In fact I feel like I'm being a little risky sharing these pictures because of that part of me that hates them. (I mean, really I hate them.) But there is also a side of me that really likes them the compositions are fun and, heck, they are in a book, a real book. So...I guess that side of me wins.
That's exciting! I can't say it enough . . . I love you style!
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean about feeling frustrated by old work, but then again, I figure it's a good sign when you know you can do better. At least your not blind to your shortcomings.
Thanks, and Yeah, I agree. I'm glad I know I can do better otherwise what would be the point of doing it over and over.
ReplyDeleteManelle, I totally, TOTALLY understand what you're saying. I've published how many books now, and I only want people to look at a couple of them if they really want to see books that I've done. On the other hand, congrats on getting your first book, and I think these look just great! The textures and compositions are wonderful. Yes, it is always good to know we can do better!
ReplyDeleteWow! Congrats! I really like these (even though you don't :). I love the way you make those textures with cross-hatching. Excellent!
ReplyDeleteIts beautiful beautiful work! I really love love love the shades of grey. Awesome work! You should be proud!
ReplyDeleteThese look great Manelle! and I know what you mean. Something that I always say about my own work is "it looks like something I did." Sometimes I leave it and it looks better, then a few hours latter... yuk! It's just in our heads as artists, I think
ReplyDeleteThe line work in these illustrations is gorgeous! is this graphite?
Yeah it's graphite. I was in a hurry on these so I put in some of the value with photoshop first, printed it out, and then added the texture.
